Based on data collected by The Avery Center, substances were used both as a means of control by traffickers and as a way to “numb the pain of the repeated trauma” of being trafficked. Additionally, the most common exit strategy for victims in our study was suicide attempt as a way to safely be admitted to a hospital and be separated from a trafficker.
