We have completed a revamp of the HT-RADAR website, including a new format for Funding Opportunities, Conferences and our Monthly Updates.

Phase Two of the website update is underway and will include an updated directory of research articles and reports and improved access to information for researchers and colleagues. Quarterly Meeting

The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for June 25th from 11:30am – 1:30pm and will be provided as a virtual meeting through Zoom.

Dr. Lianne Urada, with SDSU MSW graduate co-investigators Lauren Azar, Christian Cacho, and John Kennon, will present the extent of and intersections between human trafficking (sex trade and sexual exploitation), housing instability, and food insecurity among San Diego State University students.

In addition, guest researchers from The Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research (STIR) in the School of Social Work, within the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University will be presenting.  The STIR office, opened in 2013, is staffed by academics, researchers and law enforcement community research partners.

The goal of the STIR office is to be a central source of research on domestic sex trafficking to inform the decisions made by those who contact victims and perpetrators of sex trafficking, including law enforcement and prosecutors, educators, medical services and social services.  Research disseminated from the Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research significantly contributes to the knowledge base about sex trafficking by introducing innovative research methodologies and unique partnerships in the development of new knowledge.

After the June quarterly meeting we will survey the HT-RADAR network to determine how to best support the region, including research interests, needs and collaboration opportunities. We will also be seeking input on how to best structure our meetings moving forward. Thank you for your participation when you receive the survey.

Opportunities and Resources

Webinars

HT-RADAR will now offer information about webinars focused on anti-trafficking work and anti-trafficking research. As many of us are working remotely, here are some resources for additional educational opportunities:

Measure Outcomes in Service for Human Trafficking Survivors: Practice and Research

Cutbush, Stacey; Charm, Samantha; Gnaedig, Philip

Abstract: This CVR webinar discusses a new Excel-based tool developed to measure service outcomes for human trafficking survivors. This free tool measures changes in feelings of safety, well-being, social connectedness, and self-sufficiency. The slides provide an overview of the tool’s development and its use at CAST (Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking), an anti-human trafficking service organization in Los Angeles. The interim co-director of CAST describes how the tool helped the organization learn more about the effects of its services. Researchers from RTI International discuss how the tool was validated for widespread use and why validation matters for reliable outcome measurement.

Coordinating Multi-Victim Human Trafficking Cases: Building Partnerships, Confidentiality, and Providing Individualized Services

Webinar Link.

Powerpoint slides.

Abstract: This webinar provides insights and guidance for how to navigate working with multiple survivors involved in the same case. It touches on possible conflicts of interest, disclosures, record keeping, and recommendations for building networks and strategic planning.

The Importance of Trauma Informed Care in Anti-Trafficking Work

June 12, 2020 at 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM EST

Speakers: Meg Hughey, YWCA Kalamazoo and Ahlea Howard, International Institute of Buffalo

Abstract: Many of us have learned about trauma and trauma informed care through academic or training settings, or see this language included in every grant or program description we see. Or maybe we hear the buzzwords but don’t really know how this is (or needs to be!) part of our daily anti-trafficking work. Using language of trauma informed care doesn’t mean we have the tools to implement truly trauma informed practice with survivors of trafficking. What does being trauma informed with survivors look like? What doesn’t it look like? This session will discuss foundations of trauma informed care, and why providing trauma-informed, victim centered services with survivors of trafficking is critical. The session will also provide concrete strategies to integrate core values of trauma informed care into your work with survivors, and minimize potential for retraumatization.

COVID-19 Resources, Services, and Support

The Office on Trafficking in Persons (OTIP) is focused on preventing human trafficking and working to ensure that children and adults who have experienced trafficking and their families get the support and care they need to live safe and healthy lives. This focus remains the same during responses to public health emergencies such as COVID-19. As in times of disaster response, we recognize that disruptions to local services, housing and economic stability, and social disconnection can further increase risk of victimization and exploitation.
